Κάθε Σεπτέμβρη ανυπομονώ να αρχίσει το σχολείο. Θέλω να ξαναδώ τις φίλες μου, να τρέξουμε στην αυλή, να γεμίσουμε την τάξη με φωνές και ζωγραφιές. Όμως φέτος, κάτι ήταν αλλιώς. Τα θρανία ήταν λιγότερα. Η δασκάλα μας είπε ότι μερικά παιδιά δεν θα ξαναέρθουν γιατί το σχολείο τους έκλεισε. Κάποιοι μετακόμισαν, άλλοι δεν γράφτηκαν καθόλου.
Όλο και πιο συχνά ακούμε πως στην Ελλάδα γεννιούνται λιγότερα παιδιά. Στην Α’ Δημοτικού είμαστε πια πολύ λιγότεροι από παλιά. Ο μπαμπάς λέει πως είναι επειδή οι μεγάλοι δυσκολεύονται να κάνουν οικογένεια. Η μαμά λέει πως κι άλλες τάξεις θα συγχωνευτούν. Εγώ το μόνο που ξέρω είναι ότι η αυλή είναι πια πιο ήσυχη και η σχολική γιορτή είχε φέτος λιγότερα τραγούδια.
Αν συνεχίσει έτσι, φοβάμαι πως μια μέρα δεν θα υπάρχουν αρκετά παιδιά ούτε για μια τάξη. Και τότε, ποιος θα κρατάει τη σημαία στις παρελάσεις; Ποιος θα γεμίζει τα προαύλια με χαμόγελα; Το σχολείο μας μοιάζει με παραμύθι που χάνει σιγά σιγά τις σελίδες του…

My classroom keeps getting smaller…
A little girl wonders why her school is so empty
From the perspective of a primary school student:
Every September, I get excited for school to start again. I want to see my friends, run in the yard, and fill the classroom with drawings and laughter. But this year, something was different. There were fewer desks. Our teacher told us some kids won’t return because their school was shut down. Some moved away, and others didn’t register at all.
We keep hearing that fewer children are being born in Greece. In first grade, we’re much fewer than before. Dad says it’s because grown-ups find it hard to start families. Mom says more classes will be merged. All I know is that the yard is quieter now, and our school celebration had fewer songs.
If this continues, I’m afraid one day there won’t be enough children even for a single class. And then, who will carry the flag in the parades? Who will fill the schoolyards with laughter? Our school feels like a fairy tale slowly losing its pages…
