Περπατώντας στους κήπους… και σκοντάφτοντας στα σίδερα
Περπατώντας χθες βράδυ στους κήπους του Ζαππείου – ή καλύτερα στο Ολύμπιον Μέγαρον, όπως μας μάθαιναν παλιά – ήρθα ξανά αντιμέτωπη με το έργο της τωρινής κυβέρνησης: ένα Ζάππειο καραγιαπί, εργοτάξιο και ταυτόχρονα υπαίθριο πάρκινγκ. Σιδεριές παντού, σκουπίδια, φορτηγά, τραπέζια και αμάξια μπροστά στην είσοδο. Μια εικόνα ντροπής, που ίσως να ταίριαζε σε κάποια πλατεία του Κηφισού, αλλά όχι στον ιερό αυτό χώρο, τον πιο σπουδαίο της Αθήνας μετά την Ακρόπολη.
Το παλάτι της Αμαλίας έγινε εμποροπανήγυρη
Το Ζάππειο, που χτίστηκε από τον Χάνσεν, ανάμεσα στους βασιλικούς κήπους και τα ερείπια του Ολυμπίου Διός, ήταν το όραμα της βασίλισσας Αμαλίας για μια Αθήνα αντάξια της αρχαίας της δόξας. Και τώρα; Έχει παραδοθεί στον Θεό Μαμωνά. Όλα πουλήθηκαν. Και το Ζάππειο. Έγινε χώρος για events, για πάρκινγκ, για φορτηγά που ξεφορτώνουν προμήθειες και μαύρα αυτοκίνητα που φρουρούν εταιρικά φεστιβάλ.
Πού να το πεις και να σε πιστέψουν;
Όποιος κάνει βόλτα συχνά στο Ζάππειο, το ξέρει. Πέντε από τις επτά μέρες της εβδομάδας, κάποια εταιρεία “καταλαμβάνει” τον χώρο με το χρήμα της. Μπράβοι με μαύρα στα δρομάκια, χημικές τουαλέτες ανάμεσα στα παρτέρια, σιδεριές κρύβουν τη θέα. Αυτό είναι το νέο Ζάππειο: ένα σύμβολο της αχαλίνωτης εμπορευματοποίησης. Το μόνο που μετράει είναι το πόσα έδωσες. Και αν έδωσες λίγα, όπως στο παπούτσι της Ακρόπολης, θα κάνουν και… έρευνα.
Αν ήταν στο Παρίσι ή στη Νέα Υόρκη…
Φαντάζεστε να δείτε τέτοιο θέαμα στους κήπους του Λουξεμβούργου στο Παρίσι; Ή στο Σέντραλ Παρκ; Με φορτηγά και κάγκελα παντού; Όχι, δεν γίνεται. Μόνο εδώ. Μόνο στην Ελλάδα. Κι αναρωτιέμαι αν μπορεί να αλλάξει πια κάτι. Έχουμε συνηθίσει στη βαρβαρότητα, σαν να ‘ναι το φυσιολογικό.
Αλλά υπάρχει ελπίς – λένε
Μη στεναχωριέστε, μας λένε. Η κα Μενδώνη δεν έχει ενημερωθεί ακόμη – και όταν ενημερωθεί, θα τα φτιάξει όλα. Ο κ. Πιερρακάκης, πάλι, εντόπισε το πρόβλημα στο… μικρό ποσό που εισπράχθηκε! Δηλαδή αν ήταν μεγάλο, θα ήταν όλα καλά; Ο Θεός Μαμωνάς φαίνεται πως νίκησε. Ο άλλος, ο αληθινός Θεός, μάλλον μας εγκατέλειψε.

Walking through the gardens… and tripping over iron fences
Walking last night through the gardens of Zappeion – or the Olympion Megaron, as we used to call it – I once again witnessed the accomplishments of our government: a half-demolished Zappeion, turned into both a construction site and an open-air parking lot. Iron fences everywhere, trash, tables, trucks, and cars at the gate. A sight that may fit a highway underpass, but not the most significant monument of Athens after the Acropolis.
From Amalia’s dream to a corporate funfair
Built by Hansen, nestled between royal gardens and the ruins of Olympian Zeus’s temple, the Zappeion was Queen Amalia’s vision for reviving ancient Greek grandeur. And now? It belongs to the god of Mammon. Everything has been sold. Even Zappeion. It’s now a place for corporate events, vans unloading goods, black cars swarming the gardens, and fences hiding the classical façade.
It sounds unbelievable, but it’s real
Anyone who walks there often knows: five out of seven days, some company has “rented” the space with money and turned it into its own venue. Bouncers in black line the paths, chemical toilets stand among the flowers, trucks and fences block the view. This is the new Zappeion: a symbol of total commodification. The only value left is money. And if it’s too little, as with the “Acropolis shoe,” the minister promises an investigation – not for the act, but for the price.
Imagine this in Paris or New York…
Would you see trucks unloading beer in Luxembourg Gardens? Or Central Park surrounded by vendor tents and metal fences? Impossible. And yet, it happens here. Only in Greece. And I fear we can’t fix it anymore. This degradation has become the new normal.
But… there is “hope,” they say
Don’t worry, they say. Minister Mendoni hasn’t been informed yet – and once she is, she’ll straighten it out. Minister Pierrakakis, on the other hand, pointed out the real issue was the low amount received! So, if it had been more, we’d be proud? Mammon has taken over. And the true God? Perhaps He has already left Greece for good.
