Καθημερινά βολτάρω στην πόλη, μιλάω με δεκάδες πελάτες, από κάθε γωνιά της κοινωνίας. Και τελευταία, όλοι λένε το ίδιο: «Δεν βγαίνουμε, ρε φίλε». Δεν είναι απλώς παράπονο, είναι κραυγή. Το επιβεβαιώνει και η ΕΚΤ – όχι, δεν το είπε η γιαγιά στο Κολωνάκι. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Κεντρική Τράπεζα.
Every day I drive through this city, picking up all sorts of people. And lately, they all say the same thing: “We’re not making ends meet, my friend.” It’s not just a complaint anymore — it’s a warning. And now, even the ECB confirms it — this isn’t your grandma talking in Kolonaki, it’s the European Central Bank.

Σου λέει η ΕΚΤ ότι ο μέσος Ευρωπαίος περιμένει αύξηση τιμών 3,1% φέτος. Κι εγώ σου λέω, το σουβλάκι έχει πάει 3,5 ευρώ και ανεβαίνει. Ειδικά τα φτωχά νοικοκυριά περιμένουν τα χειρότερα. Κι εμείς εδώ στην Αθήνα, τους βλέπουμε κάθε μέρα – στα φανάρια, στα νοίκια, στο καφενείο.
The ECB says the average European expects prices to rise by 3.1% this year. I say the souvlaki is already at €3.50 and climbing. Especially low-income households are bracing for the worst. Here in Athens, we see them daily — at the traffic lights, the rent offices, the coffee shops.

Περίμενε τώρα, λέει ότι θα έχουμε -1,9% ύφεση στους επόμενους 12 μήνες. Και η ανεργία πάνω από 10%. Τι να σου κάνει το μεροκάματο όταν οι λογαριασμοί καίνε και οι δουλειές σπανίζουν; Πόσους φοιτητές έχω πάρει που λένε “μακάρι να φύγω εξωτερικό”. Μακάρι…
Now hold on, they say we’re heading for a -1.9% recession in the next 12 months. And unemployment? Over 10%. What can your daily wage do when bills are on fire and jobs are vanishing? I’ve had so many students in my cab saying, “I just want to leave the country.” I don’t blame them.

Owning a Home? A Luxury Dream
Ο άλλος λέει, “θα πάρω δάνειο”. Ναι, με τι επιτόκιο; 4,5% και βλέπουμε. Αν είσαι φτωχός, μέχρι και 5,1%. Τα σπίτια ανεβαίνουν κι άλλο – λέει 3,2% αύξηση τον επόμενο χρόνο. Σαν να παίζεις λόττο κάθε φορά που ζητάς πίστωση…
Someone says, “I’ll get a mortgage.” Sure, at what rate? 4.5%, maybe more. If you’re low-income, it can hit 5.1%. Housing prices are rising too — 3.2% up next year. It’s like playing the lottery every time you apply for a loan.

Το χειρότερο; Δεν είναι ο αριθμός. Είναι η σιωπή. Όλοι είναι τρομαγμένοι. Δεν μιλάει κανείς φωναχτά, μόνο χαμηλόφωνα, σαν να φοβούνται μην το κακοκαρδίσουν. Μια αβεβαιότητα που πλανάται σαν καυσαέριο – την εισπνέεις χωρίς να το θες.
The worst part? It’s not the numbers. It’s the silence. Everyone’s scared. No one speaks loudly, just whispers — as if afraid to jinx it. A kind of uncertainty floats over us like smog — you breathe it in without noticing.

Hope Dies… Slowly
Μόνο οι νέοι, λέει, έχουν λίγη ελπίδα – όσοι είναι κάτω των 35. Ίσως επειδή δεν πρόλαβαν να δουν πόσο άγρια γίνεται η ζωή όταν μεγαλώνεις με δόσεις, δάνεια και αγωνία. Εγώ, τους εύχομαι να έχουν δίκιο. Αλλά κρατάω μικρό καλάθι.
Only the young, they say, are a bit more hopeful — those under 35. Maybe because they haven’t yet felt how cruel life becomes when you live on credit, loans, and constant stress. I wish they’re right. But I’m not betting on it.
