Ένας Γλάρος στεκόταν στην ακτή και κοίταζε τη Θάλασσα.
«Πίνεις τα νερά όλων των ποταμών» της είπε. «Χιλιάδες κύματα σε γεμίζουν κάθε μέρα. Δεν κουράστηκες; Δεν χόρτασες;»
Η Θάλασσα γέλασε με τον ήχο των κυμάτων:
«Όσα ποτάμια κι αν πέσουν μέσα μου, εγώ ποτέ δεν γεμίζω. Έτσι είναι η φύση μου».
Ο Γλάρος σκέφτηκε για λίγο και αποκρίθηκε:
«Τότε μοιάζεις με τον άνθρωπο που διψά για δύναμη. Όσο κι αν αποκτήσει, πάντα ζητά κι άλλο, χωρίς τέλος».
Κι έφυγε πετώντας, για να μη μπερδευτεί στην αχόρταγη αγκαλιά της.
Ηθικό δίδαγμα:
Η Θάλασσα δεν γεμίζει ποτέ, όσα ποτάμια κι αν πέσουν μέσα της∙ κι έτσι και η δίψα του ανθρώπου για δύναμη δεν έχει όριο, αν δεν βρει μέτρο.

The Seagull and the Sea
A Seagull stood on the shore, gazing at the Sea.
“You drink the waters of every river,” he said. “Thousands of waves fill you each day. Aren’t you tired? Aren’t you full?”
The Sea laughed with the sound of her waves:
“No matter how many rivers flow into me, I am never full. That is my nature.”
The Seagull paused and replied:
“Then you are like man, whose thirst for power never ends. Whatever he gains, he always desires more.”
And he flew away, unwilling to be caught in her endless embrace.
Moral:
The Sea is never full, no matter how many rivers flow into it; so too man’s thirst for power has no limit, unless he finds measure.
